Introduction
Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan is a park cum zoo that is situated in Patna. It is just 8 km from Patna junction and 1 km from Patna airport. It is also known as Sanjay Gandhi biological park. Commonly people are known it as a Patna Zoo. Its name is on a famous Indian politician and son of our former prime minister Shreemati Indira Gandhi. It is the 4th largest zoo in the country (2022). It was opened for public in 1973.
It is situated near baily road Patna, Bihar. This zoo is in 152.95 acres (61.90 ha) and there are many livings being is inhabited here. This zoo is a dreamed picnic spot for the people of Bihar, with more than 36,000 visitors on New Year’s Day alone in 2022. There is total 800 animals in the cage of zoo and there are many types of animals and plants.
The zoo is currently home to over 800 animals of about 110 species, including tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, Hippopotamus, crocodile, elephants, Himalayan black bear, jackal, black bucks, spotted deer, peafowl, hill myna, gharial, python, Indian rhinoceros, chimpanzee, giraffe, emu, and white peacock.

History
Actually, this park was first established as a botanical garden in 1969. The Governor of Bihar, Shi Nityanand Kanungo provided almost 34 acres of land from the Governor House campus for the garden. In 1972, Public works added 58.2 acres to this, and the Revenue Department transferred 60.75 acres to the Forest Department to Expand the park. In 1973, this park has now become the biological garden with zoo. The land acquired from the public works Department and Revenue Department was declared protected forest by the government on 08 March 1983.
Now a day this park is known as Sanjay Gandhi Jaivik Udyan and this is open all day for the people except one maintenance day.

- There is a lake inside the zoo complex, where person want to do boating with family and friend. It is chargeable.
- There was a toy train, person was used to see all cage of the zoo and the beauty of the nature but now it is not workable.
- Elephant ride, Snake and Aquarium is the main attractions of the zoo to visit.

- There is a lake in the center of the zoo where a boat ride is being organized. There are two types of Boat. First is two-seater and second is four-seater. Single seater boating cost is 80₹ per person and for four-seater is approx. same. Charges can be vary according to the season.
- Mainly people visit here the month of Dec and Jan, that time rate of boating is high as per demand.
- For lunch, there is a Restaurant where every vej and non veg dises is available.

Rehabilitation of wildlife
Patna zoo has taken a great initiative, and they rehabilitation of injured and displaced wildlife. They rescue the animals who is not able to survive in the Jungle and give them medication. They Release them after the recovery.

Breeding Program
This initiative ensures the survival and increase the population of those type of animals whose survival is in danger. For example, the conservation Breeding of Indian Rhinoceros and Bengal tiger at the zoo underscores their endeavor to support vulnerable population.
Though carefully monitoring and scientific expertise, Patna Zoo is the witness of the birth of many healty offspring which is essential to maintain genetic diversity.
