The southern tip of the country has the ground where public speak one of the earliest speech of the earth, Tamil, which is none other than Tamilnadu. Thanjavur also known by its anglicized name Tanjore, and Thanjavur is the Eleventh largest city in Tamilnadu after Chennai, Vellore, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Salem, Tiruppur, Tirunelveli, Erode and Thoothukudi. Thanjavur is located about 10 km south of the Kaveri River.

Thanjavur gets its name from a demon named Tanjan, who according to lore, caused a lot of devastation and was killed by Sri Anandavalli Amman and Sri Neelamegapperumal. Demon Tanjan's last request was that the city might be named after him, which was granted. Thanjavur is one of the older cities in Tamilnadu and has a lot of significance in Dravidian history.

Thanjavur (Tanjore) became the most significant town during the rule of the Chola Kings from the 11th to the 14th Century. Apart from growing to wonder, this place grew to be a great hold of knowledge and traditions. The town, Thanjavur, is the head-quarters of the District. One special landmark of Thanjavur is that this place is known as the Rice Bowl of India & Rice is transported throughout the country as well as exported else where.

Museums and other tourist attractions

Manora: Manora is an eight storied conquest tower constructed to respect the triumph of the British over Napoleon Bonaparte at the battleground nomenclated as the Waterloo.

Archeological Museum: In this Archeological museum there are many precious and attractive statues conserved in it.

Tamil University Museum: In this museum, the coinage and tuneful instruments used by the prehistoric monarchs, choir and citizens are potted in it.

Saraswathi Mahal Library: The olden palm leaves and paper documents are conserved in this collection. This Library was recognized in 1700 AD and contains 44000 manuscripts. There are 4500 extraordinary books autographed by Kings and Scholars. Virtually eighty percent of the manuscripts are in Sanskrit language. Some are very rare and exclusive. The Tamil works are of treatise on medication and observations on the ancient Tamil works.

Sivaganga Garden: This is a very gorgeous park and is located on the North of the gigantic Temple in Thanjavur.

Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram Mani Mandapam: Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram, a poet was born on 13.04.1930. This is his commemorative located at Pattukottai and precisely in Muthupettai Salai. The hall contains his figurine, life history and Photographs.

Rajarajan Memorial Hall: This commemorative plaque was constructed on the eve of the juncture of the World Tamil discourse, which took place in Thanjavur. This hall is decorated with a beautiful park.

The Big Temple: This temple is a classic illustration for the Indian statuette, its architectures and its greatness. This temple has the tallest tower over the shrine. The height of the tower is 216 feet. The inside shrine of the temple has a Bull fashioned statue which is fairly full-size which guards the shrine. The dimension of the bull is 12 feet tall, nearly 20 feet long and 8 and a quarter feet wide.

Best time to visit: This place proves ideal for tourism all round the year.

How to get there:

Nearest Railhead: Thanjavur is one of the principal Railway Junctions in Southern Railway. It is connected to Chennai (popularly called as the Main line) via Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore and Villupuram. It is also connected to Nagore in the East and Tiruchirappalli in the West.

Road: Thanjavur is well connected with other parts of the state by Road. Three National Highways connect Thanjavur to various parts of the country like Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore, Mysore, Madurai etc.

The State Express Transport Corporation operates buses to Chennai, Bangalore, Ernakulam, Marthandam, Nagercoil, Tirupathi, Thiruvananthapuram, Ooty and to various other parts of the southern states.
