Hogenakkal Waterfalls Travel Guide

Hogenakkal Falls are the beautiful water falls which is located in Hogenakkal Village in Dharmapuri District on the borders of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The Hogenakal Falls are so called as Hoge whenever the water falls on the rocks it appears as if smoke is coming out from the top of the Kal (rock) because of the force of water and hence the name Hogenakkal. It is also called as Marikottayam by the people of Tamilnadu.

This is one of the wonderful waterfalls in Tamil Nadu. Hogenakkal Falls is a part of the river Cauvery and is about 250 meters above sea level. The main attraction of the falls is its vertical drop from a height of 20 meters with a thundering sound.

Hogenakkal Falls is sometimes referred to as the "Niagara of India." With its fame for medicinal baths and boat rides, it is a major site of tourist attraction. Carbonatite rocks in this site are considered to be the oldest of its kind in South Asia and one of the oldest in the world.

Before reaching Hogenakkal, the river flows through a dense forests which contains herbs that are traditionally believed to enhance health and taking bath in these waters is believed to be good for skin. Hogenakkal is unique as it is the only natural, traditional river spa in our land. Here, the water spreads for miles around. The area is surrounded by hills and offers lovely panoramic view.

Boating is allowed in the summer season as the water flow is not very fast on these days. Local Boats called as parisal in Tamil and either teppa in Kannada Often referred to as circular basket boats; operate from Tamilnadu to Karnataka Banks of the gorge. It also offers a thrilling experience; freshly caught fish are also sold by the fishermen at a distance and not near the falls.

The best time to visit the place is from July to August.

Nearest Airport is situated in Bangalore at distance of 130 km.

Nearest Railway station is in Salem 114 km and also from Bangalore.

We can reach Hogenakkal by road from Bangalore which is situated at distance of 130 km tourist taxis and buses are available on hire to move in and around Hogenakkal.
